CHAPTER 38
Darby
âIs that verbatim?â I asked.
âNot exactly. But close enough Iâd call it a smoking gun.â
I mulled over what weâd learned earlier, before the accident. âIt doesnât seem to jibe with what I know so far.â
Nettie shrugged. âI canât help that. Iâm just telling you what Iâve found.â
âCould it have been falsified?â
âI donât know,â said Nettie. âThe data weâre sifting through has been deleted, though weâre trying to recover it. But itâs possible. Does this Pierce guy seem like the type who could kill someone?â
âAnyone could kill given the right circumstances.â
Nettie frowned. âI donât think my great-aunt Chloe could. But then again, sheâs 87 and her visionâs mostly gone.â
âYou know what I mean,â I said.
âRight. But not everyone has a killer instinct. What about Pierce?â
I frowned, thinking on some of what Mark and I had discussed that day. âMaybe. But we werenât onto him when he came in yesterday. He does have a record. Not a violent one, though.â
Nettie exhaled. âAll right. Iâll keep digging. Weâre done, then?â
âI think so,â I said. âI need to scoot anyway. I have a sorta date.â
Nettie lifted a brow as we walked toward the lifts. âA new guy? Oh, do tell, Darby!â
I chuckled. âIâd love to, but I promised Iâd meet him, and I only have about ten minutes left, and I still need a shower.â
âYouâre no fun,â Nettie said in a mock pout.
âMaybe if you hurry, you can catch Celia before she leaves. Iâm sure sheâd love to give you the scoop.â
âAnd here I thought all this time you were sweet on Mark,â she teased.
I frowned as we got on the lifts. âWhat would give you that idea?â
She shrugged. âThe way you two connect. Thereâs somethinâ special there. Ah, well, you have fun tonight. Donât do anything I wouldnât do.â
I watched her get off on the ground floor, waving when she turned back to send me a bright smile.
But as I went down the rest of the way to the locker room, I found myself thinking about her words. What had she been talking about? Our work style? How we played off each other?
Or was it something more? Had our literal connection not gone as unnoticed as I thought?
